how do i build a computer with 2 small processors?

Q. i have bought a lot of old school computers. i would like to rebuild them and give them to less fortunate children for home use they presently have next to no hard drive so when i replace the 500mb hard drives with 20gb i will need more power from the tiny processors so i figured i would see if i could run with 2
some of these motherboards appear to have 2 places. is it possible to transplant? how?

A. Nice gesture petes mom! Don't get discouraged yet! However there are a few more problems, than just trying to install two processors for power.
(You can't. Don't try it. Motherboards that have two processors are for server computers anyway. Slower than heck, compared to the same processor speed in a single processor computer. They check and recheck the data before it is used. Dual core technology is a whole different 'game', and I'm not referring to this.)

So you got the 20GB units to work? Went past the harddrive limitation size on these old computers? http://www.dewassoc.com/kbase/hard_drives/hard_drive_size_barriers.htm

Next up is the O/S. Unless you have a Windows installation disk, for each and every computer. You could use a 'mirror image' of each Windows O/S on every harddrive, and transfer it to the 20GB ones.
http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm Free software
Windows license states, "One genuine copy per One computer".
I hope these aren't Win95! lol! Win98? Ummmm, hmmmm,wellll,
Whatever!
When Windows is installed on a computer,(Activation, not Register.), it assigns 'codecs', to three major components,
1.Processor
2.Harddrive
3.Motherboard,(More specifically the BIOS program, on the BIOS chip, on the motherboard)
Change any two of these hardware components, and Windows wants to be re-activated. Sometimes just changing the harddrive, or processor does it.

Did you know that the Linux O/S uses less processor, and ram resources? Did you know the way the kernel is built, that it's virtually spyware/virus, etc., free? Did you know that 98% of Linux distro's,(Distributions), are FREE, and you can download them off the 'net?
Do you know that with installing Wine,(Free), Linux O/S'es can play Windows based games? Do you know that there are 1000's of free applications and programs for Linux? There is a free Office program,(OpenOffice.org), that looks very similar to MS Office, can run MS Office based documents, etc., plus anything composed in this program can be run on a MS Office based computer? (Doesn't lose files either!)
1.http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm
2.http://www.linux.com/articles/60208 (I love it! They have a Cyber Defender Anti-Spyware advertisement, on here! lol! Apparently they've never read the ARTICLE!)
3.http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/iso (I have downloaded 3 distro's of Ubuntu this way. Takes about 1hr and 45 minutes using a medium speed DSL connection. I always follow the directions implicitly, and have found that Infra Recorder, is WAY better than any version of Nero that I've had! (It's free also!)
4.http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/installingsoftware
5.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qyFwZeC-DQ
6.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSGf9pFupjg

Edit: It's because they are Server motherboards. Like this,
http://www.weirdstuff.com/cgi-bin/item/15184
(By the way, scroll down to mid-page on the next link. They start with Intel Celeron's for Socket 370. They have Pentium III's also. Check the price. I know it's good stuff, because I have bought two motherboard's from them. One was a medium speed gamer board. They go FAST! lol!)
http://www.weirdstuff.com/cgi-bin/category/CPU000)

Depends on the age of the dual processor server board, but some of the old ones also needed voltage regulators. These are plug in modules, and there is one per processor.

(Need sum help? Email me with your questions. My background? I started, around the time Windows 3.1 was the 'hot' thing. Also click on my avatar.)

Edit 2: What I meant about the top paragraph above in parentheses, is that if it were a Single processor socket motherboard, you can't install two processors. With a Dual processor socket motherboard, of course you can!
Your added comments, came after I posted this.

Linux distros that support closed software but not Ubuntu?
Q. The newest update of Ubuntu (Natty Narwhal) is shit. I picked Ubuntu because I wanted to be able to use mp3s and flash with the least amount of trouble but now it's just getting harder and harder to work as a programmer.

I would like a distro that would support these things and allow easy install but I don't need the pretty gui and user friendly interface. If I wanted that I would have bought a mac.

A. I'm not sure what you mean when you said you don't want a pretty gui, because most people who want their proprietary drivers and codecs enabled out of the box want the pretty gui. If you are looking for a more simplistic look i would recommend a different desktop enviorment other than kde or gnome. Perhaps a light one like xfice or enlightenment.
Well, i'm not sure if it was the new unity desktop enviorment that you didnt' like or ubuntu in general, so i'll suggest a few work arounds for both. Zorin os is one of the easiest distributions i have ever used. It is based upon ubuntu, but it uses the older classic gnome desktop envelopment (2.32 i think it is.) It looks very similar to windows actually, and everything works out of the box. But you still have the ubuntu tools such as ubuntu tweak and the software center, so if you just didn't like the distribution in general that may not be the right solution. Also, kubuntu is ubuntu with the kde desktop environmental. But again, that is just a unity work around, and doesn't change ubuntu in general.
PcLinuxOS is very easy to use as well. It is based on Mandriva, so it has nothing to do with ubuntu or debian. Everything works perfectly out of the box, and it is very easy to customize. It comes with any desktop environment you want, be it kde, gnome, or enlightenment. It has everything enabled out of the box.
There are certain distrobutions such as tiny core and bodhi linux that are fairly simply and have a very minimalist approach, so that you can completely customize its look yourself. Therefore, as it comes it is very minimalist, lightweight, and simple. However, due to its minimalist approach not everything you need will already be installed, so just know that if you go down this rout.
Mandriva, Pclinuxos, zorinos, and as already mentioned linux mint are easy to use and come working out of the box. Distrobutions such as bodhi linux and tiny core allow a more simplistic approach that still provides a fairly easy experience. But the fact remains, that if you want an advanced or simplistic interface you are going to have to go for a more advanced distrobution where not everything will work right away, and it will take time to get going. I hope one of these will suite your needs, email me if you have questions.

Best Linux for an older computer with not so great specs?
Q. I have an old machine kicking around and I want to get linux running on it. It runs windows XP right now but it has very little RAM. I am not very technical at all so any help would be greatly appreciated :)

A. DSL, Puppy or Tiny Core will run on almost any hardware, but, as they are all quickly downloadable, try them all & see which you like best. And don't dismiss any of the "mainframe" sized distros, as they can run well on limited hardware, as has been said.

Linux and WinXP Media Center at the same time in different screens?

Q. I have 1 laptop and a spare monitor. I want to use windows xp media center edition and linux (pardus) in seperate screens. But
I don't know
how can I install linux without partitioning my harddisk?
and how can I work with linux and win XP at the same time in same machine but different screens?

I'd appreciate your help
I have WinXP Media Center now.
How i'll install linux to boot with a Virtual Machine program ?

A. Use a VM (virtual machine) to emulate a pc running linux and then use dual screens (supposing your graphics card supports it) and just put the VM on that screen.

Here's a link to a good VM: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/default.aspx

Well, you have a linux cd right? Insert it in and select it as the boot device in your VM program - you should be able to install it as you normaly would and it won't overwrite anything in windows. Dont boot it from your bios, boot it from INSIDE the VM.

What is the best Linux Media Center Distribution?
Q. I am looking for something that I can boot right into that will allow me to play all of my videos, music, and hopefully old video games like SNES, NES, and other systems. I've seen Ubuntu Media Center and I am waiting for that but other than that I really can't find any media center that I can just install by itself without having to install a distribution underneath it. If there is a MythTV, Freevo, or other media center ISO that I can install as my main OS then that's what I'm looking for. Just gimme anything that's out there.
I also wouldn't mind hearing about speeding Media Center Application that can be installed for a Windows XP PC. My PC isn't that fast and I am looking for a good solution.
Once again, I'm looking for an OS that is a media center by itself without having to install anything at all.

A. Check out Linux MCE

What is a good Linux Media Centre for the PS3?
Q. I want to be able to easily stream media files to my PS3 over wifi, however the PS3 OS doesnt support many of the files and I dont like alot of the transcoders (e.g. orb, tversity, etc). So I was wondering if the was a good media centre software like XBMC for PS3 linux?

It has to be able to work on an SDTV (576i).

A. Sure, it's called Mplayer.

That's kind of a joke. There is a "media center" version of Ubuntu but I don't think it has a ps3 platform release.

The first thing you must do with linux is break the addiction to the do-it-all software that people use with windows. Nobody makes that stuff i linux because there's no money in it; but on the other hand, having to do it yourself clues you in to the secret they don't want you to know, that it's easy and you don't need to depend on all the commercial stuff and malware (for example, ps3video9 which spies on your pc).

Here is where to get ps3 ubuntu:

http://www.psubuntu.com

Try intrepid or Jaunty, Hardy never quite worked right on ps3. (i.e. use version 7.10, 8.10, or 9.xx)

Once you've got it installed, open synaptic package manager, run a search for Mplayer, and download and install it. Find medibuntu.com for the restricted codecs you'll need, because they don't include them on the install disc.

Mplayer can watch any video stream and pretty much handle any format, and under ps3 linux, it's the only decent video player. It's been patched to compensate for the RSX being locked under linux. The video doesn't look very good, but it's not so crappy either.

If you want a upnp client specifically, use synaptic to search for one, I'm sure they're there. But with Mplayer, all you really need to do is set up a stream with WMP or VLC from your pc, then you should be able to view it with Mplayer on your ps3.

Ubuntu does work in SD but it's not very much fun. There aren't really any good distros for 576i. Video will work, but not look so great.

You might want to just get a better transcoder. I don't know what tversity uses but there's lots of good gui's for ffmpeg. Try getting firefox 3.0 if you don't already have it, then find and download the download manager add-on, and then the manager's converter add-on. This converter is basically an ffmpeg GUI and you can hand it entire folders of video, with default or custom conversion instructions. If you've got a bunch of downloaded .wmv videos, you can just pass them to the converter with settings to convert to .mp4 under lavcodec, same quality, audio libfaac, and you'll end up with a folder of videos your ps3 can watch via upnp, within an hour or two.

How do you remove a Linux OS to install windows?

Q. I purchased a "used" computer from my company and it has a Linux OS on it. I would like to wipe it clean and install windows, but not sure how. Is there an easy way to do this?
I tried starting up with the windows 7 disk, in hopes it would just "over ride" the other, but no luck. The current OS is uBuntu...not sure if that makes a difference or not.

A. If you have a cd/dvd of the operating system you want, just put in on your optical drive
turn on your computer, press F8 or whatever button to change start up drive, change booth drive to your optical drive, save setting, exit and reboot.
Your computer will read your cd/dvd and will prompt you.
It will find your hard drive and ask you if you want to install it on that drive. (default C drive).
If you have a huge hard drive, you can partition your C drive to whatever size you want.
I prefer to assign only 50 Gig for drive C. Once the operating system is installed, I partition the remaining drive and use it as storage drive.
It fill format the drive and install your operating system.
Just follow the instructions of the install prompts.

If you are still having problems, use a separate computer, search for Hiren's boot cd in .iso format. Download and burn on cd/dvd. Just boot the cd in your used computer. It has a lot of partitioning programs you can choose to reformat your hard drive.

What is the BEST Linux OS to use in conjunction with Windows 7 Professional OS?
Q. I very much like Linux and am very new to Windows 7 Professional OS (that's the reason for all the Windows 7 Professional questions on here, which I do appreciate everyone's helpful responses). Can you recommend a Linux OS that would complement Windows 7 Professional OS? A computer technician friend recommend Ubuntu. Thank you in advance, my friends, as I truly appreciate your helpfulness. :-)

A. Dual boot Ubuntu.
You will still be able to access and edit your Windows files from Ubuntu which will make the eventual transition to a Windows free world easier.
Imagine never having to pay for software again, thats life with Ubuntu.

Is it necessary for a physicist to master Linux OS?
Q. Hello everyboby! I have a question about computer operating system, that is: Is it necessary for a scientist to master Linux OS?

I mean physicist and astronomer, I've heard that physicists and astronomers usually use Linux/UNIX, not Microsoft Windows. Is it true? Lots of people say that Linux/UNIX is very difficult to use, I've tried Ubuntu Linux and found it's really hard to use.
Thank you!

A. It would take much more time, study, difficulty and definitely expensive schooling to become a Physicist than a become a Master of Linux. I became pretty proficient in using Linux after about 2 years of just being one of my hobbies. It didn't seem very difficult, just required some dedication to learn new ways to use computers. Linux knowledge is not required for my job, but it certainly has added to my abilities as a computer service and repair technician. It certainly would be useful to know Linux and a programming language like Python if you are going to do any physics or astronomy computer simulations. I have read many comments from Physicists on Slashdot.com, I don't know if it required, but it certainly sounds like a useful skill for them.

how can i create a root previledge user?
Q. I need to create another user in linux which will have all the previledges of a root user. Please suggest me how to create a user which will have all the power of root.

A. If the above didn't help, instead of giving someone the root password, you can try configuring sudo if it's Fedora or Ubuntu linux, the file /etc/sudoers contains a lot of options to fine-tune it

How did microsoft become such a monopoly to PC manufacturers?
Q. I am a linux user and it does not seem right that one company can be in a oligopy with no other competitors. Other than a netbook from two years ago, i have never seen a computer for sale at a store without the windows os(not even a mac).

A. A long time ago, in a land far away....

Computers back then weren't these small home machines we have now because there wasn't an operating system that a typical home user could make any use of. Computers were massive machines with complicated systems that usually required a programmer because we also didn't have things like MS Office or Quickbooks yet.

Mr Gates and some other people thought it would be cool if everyone could have a computer in their house. The hold-up was an operating system that would allow small machines (and back then we thought an 8 bit machine with a magnetic tape drive was some hot stuff) to function usefully for every-day users. So he (and some others) created/modified an operating system (DOS) that could do exactly that. IBM made a small machine (PC-Jr then PX-XT) that could use that system and was inexpensive enough for most people to own. It didn't require a master's degree in computer science to operate but did require a bit of a nerd.

Some other computer makers started making home computers around that operating system and specification (PC compatible) that had good uses for everyone at home and at work. And it grew exponentially very fast. And then, Microsoft tossed out Windows (esp. 3.1 then '95) and the way we compute changed immeasurably. Any 4th grader could use a computer then.

So imagine that you invented a certain kind of fuel and then all of the car makers started making lots of cars that run on your fuel. They could have made cars to run on other fuel - and some did - but almost everyone had a car that runs on yours. What happens to your company? It just grows and grows and after a while just about everyone expects that "cars run on X fuel with few exceptions"

That's what happened at Microsoft - computers used MSDOS and Windows, with few exceptions.

Now, they don't really have a monopoly because, as you noted, Linux (and others) remain an option. Nobody made a law that says "you must use Microsoft products" and you're free to use whatever OS you'd like or even write your own.

So how did Microsoft get in the position they're in now? 1) they were very early to the market 2) they continued to improve their line 3) they produced a product that other companies based theirs upon so that the MS product became essential 4) They didn't give it away for free so they could afford to keep improving it.

Whether it's "right" - what if you had created DOS and Windows? Would you give it away for free so that Dell, Gateway, IBM, Asus, etc... could all make lots of money off of your work? Would you share all of the source code with everyone in the world so they could make it too - and sell it to other people without giving you any money? No, I didn't think so. Me neither.

But, if you don't like Microsoft products you have plenty of company and are free to use whatever other OS you'd like (or to write your own) and nobody will complain. It's one of the great things about a free market - even a free market that has huge big players in it. You can write your very own operating system and sell it to whoever likes it. If yours is as good as theirs, you might even take their place. (Firefox and Google took someone else's place in the market that way)

What design programs.........Asus Eee PC 8G Linux Laptop?

Q. I LOVE to design, but i am moving with my sister soon and i can't take my old desktop computer that i had when i was living with my mom, so i decided to invest in the Asus Eee PC 8G Linux Laptop(just ordered it online). I was wondering what programs are compatible with this laptop? By the way, i use Photoshop CS3 Extended now. Also if you have any other tips for me about this laptop please leave them!.

A. It runs Xandros Linux. There are tons of programs available for Linux, but you won't be able to use a lot of the programs you use with Windows. Don't worry, there is tons of alternatives that are, in many cases, better

Check this out:
http://www.linuxalt.com/

Look up your favorite Windows programs, and check out the Linux alternatives.

Also, there is a program called Wine, which allows you to run many Windows programs on Linux. I don't think Photoshop CS3 runs yet, but I know Photoshop CS2 runs quite well. Photoshop might take up all the hard drive space on that thing. Check out GIMP for a photoshop alternative, it'll most likely be preinstalled on your laptop

How do i use Xarchiver to download files?
Q. I have a linux laptop and i want to download Lubi so i can download further programmes e.g Ubuntu, WIne, Shockwave. When i have downloaded the file for Lubi the Xarchiver thing comes up and it is just a load of files. I dont know how to install the software.
thanks (:

A. You shouldn't have downloaded the Lubi app from the source site.

You should just select Lubi in the Ubuntu Package Manager, instead.

Here's the Step by Step:

TIP: Repeat for all other applications you listed.

How do I clone my Operating System for use on another machine?
Q. I have 2 laptops. One runs Windows 7. The other runs linux.

I also have a 2TB USB hard drive.

Both laptops are legally owned. So is Windows 7 (from the one laptop).

How do I "clone" Windows 7 and put it on the linux laptop?

A. You wouldn't. The first thing that would happen would be the windows genuine warning. Secondly, the hardware isn't the same which would only compound your problems.

What's the best version to of UNIX Operating System to use with Dell 4100?

Q. I am new to UNIX Operating System and am interested to know what version of it is the best one to use on a Dell 4100?

Whats the difference from Linux and UNIX?

Is one any better then the other? If so why?

What are the links to the best web sights to down load Linux of UNIX?

Any other info regarding this topic would be fine.

A. UNIX is a specification. There are many "UNIX" operating systems, such as Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, and Mac OS X. Linux is an operating system kernel that implements most or all of the features of UNIX but is not certified as such.

When it comes to running UNIX on generic hardware, you're pretty much limited to Solaris. All other forms of UNIX have specific hardware platforms. Solaris may run on your system if you have maxed out the RAM, although it may still be slow.

Linux supports a wider variety of hardware, is free, and can be tailored to almost any systems specs. As such, I would generally say it is "better", unless there is some specific application that won't run on Linux, or your goal specifically is to learn UNIX administration. The command line tools provided with most Linux distros aren't strictly POSIX compliant and will work slightly differently than the standard UNIX ones.

Downloads:

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solaris11/downloads/index.html?ssSourceSiteId=ocomen - Solaris
http://www.ubuntu.com/ - Ubuntu
http://xubuntu.org/ - Xubuntu (may run faster on your system)
http://www.centos.org/ - CentOS (based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, an Enterprise-grade Linux distro)
http://www.debian.org/ - Debian (my personal favorite)

What unix operating system should I install on my macbook?
Q. I saw here a list of some unix operating systems: http://www.tech-faq.com/download-unix.shtml

Which would be recommended to be installed on my macbook? (Please tell me whether the operating system is known to work without problems on a mac.) I am a comp. sci. student.

A. I don't think you need to install Unix on MAC since MAC OS X is itself built on Unix OS.

All functionality of unix is present in OS X.
Search for origin of OSX on wikipedia.

If you would still like to try another flavour of linux try Ubuntu since it is easy to install and you can first try it using Live CD.

Is there still a pure unix system out there for download?
Q. I have tried linux, windows, and mac os x. I am curious however to see what a unix operating system with GUI looks like. I have heard and read countless of articles of linux being based on the "rock solid" and "very stable" UNIX kernel. I want to get the "pure" unix operating system not linux. Does anyone have any information about why UNIX is gone?

A. Unix still exists, but is generally only installed on custome hardware and often won't run on anything else. Irix (SGI's unix flavor) is one example if this, as well as HP-UX and AIX by HP and IBM, respectively. You can try Open Solaris, which is Sun's unix OS. It runs on standard PCs. Ditto for OpenBSD.

How do you install softwares downloaded from other sites to Linux (Ubuntu)?

Q. Pls tell me in detail, step by step, as I have downloaded .tar & .tar.gz files on my ubuntu linux desktop. I am new to linux and i only know that I have to open terminal and type the codes. Tell me how to open, how to install and where to install.

A. save yourself a lot of hassles and use the package manager. Linux doesn't install software in the same way as windows. With windows, you just download the file and its all there. Run the setup executable and it installs. easy. With linux, there's the software (tar.gz etc) that you've downloaded and then there may be up to 5, 10, + packages that need to be installed so that the file can run. These include libraries, programming languages, etc. You also have to make sure you obtain the correct version of each dependency. It can be a real pain in the butt.

The package manager makes all the calculations for you. You just tell it what you want to install and it gets all the dependencies and sets them all up for you. Ubuntu has a great range of packages already available. Only go the downloading and installing non .deb files if you really have no alternative or if you can see that the dependencies required are either already installed or easy to obtain.

How is Linux different from Windows?
Q. I saw a picture of the Linux desktop and the interface seemed almost identical to windows.

A. In Linux, the core operating system and the window system are separate.

Linux will run happily without the window system, and servers typically do.

The lower layer of the window system is X. This allows the interface and/or windows to be displayed across a network. The higher level part of the the window system is the window manager, and there are many choices for window managers. Different ones look, work and feel different.

In windows, you get what you get. No options, no default over-the-network functionality.

The OS kernel in Linux implements a clear separation of power between users, services and kernel. This clean(er) design leads to Linux tending to be more secure.

There is a high level of isolation between programs. One program crashing will not bring the rest of the system down. Windows doesn't bear up nearly so well.

Unlike windows, Linux tends not to slow down for no apparent reason after a year of use.

Linux is open and free, you can copy, modify and share it. Windows isn't.

Linux comes with bucket loads of application software of all types. Windows doesn't.

Linux usually comes with the development libraries, tools and compilers out of the box, so you can start developing. Windows doesn't and the tools costs a lot.

Linux comes with a number of powerful command line tools. If you want to bypass the window system, you can. You can administer, configure and use the system from the command line if you with. In windows, you can't.

Linux is not one product. There are many distributions packing together the kernel, applications and an installer. They differ in focus and approach. Some aimed at small size and efficiency, some aimed at desktop use, some aimed at servers etc.

Is there a remote support client that supports linux?
Q. My primary computer is my Macbook pro (OSX), and I need to access my Linux Desktop. I used Teamviewer before, when my Desktop ran Xp, but i changed to Ubuntu. Is there any other reliable (preferably free) program that can fill in for this?

A. You want to take a look at VNC {Virtual Network Computing}, which is a protocol that allows a desktop to be viewed & remotely controlled over the internet. It is available in free Open Source versions as well as some that are not free.

From your question it sounds like you want to set up the VNC server on the system running Ubuntu and use a VCN client on your Macbook to interact with it.

What is a good book for learning UNIX and Linux?

Q. I'm a windows person, but have played with Ubuntu before, but I don't know much of anything about it. I would like to learn to program bash/shell code. My end goal is to build my own custom Linux distro, if not through Linux From Scratch at least customize a solid system. Much appreciation!!!!

Good luck

What is the best or easiest Linux to start using LFS on?
Q. I'm starting for the first time to use Linux from Scratch, but it says I have to use it on a 32-bit Linux. Which Linux would be easy to start on?

Any other help about starting to use LFS would help. What is Linux from Script??????????????????

A. Slackware would be a good choice, it includes most (all?) of the tools you'll need to start building your system.

What is the best way to build Linux for Scratch?
Q. I tried to make it my own distro right on my 8 gb hard drive but i ran into sooo sooo many errors like make and configure errors. I wanted to see how someone with experience started off. With a linux-swap partition? I just want everything to run smoothly. Please give me any tips or anything that would help

A. LSF is not for beginners.
Read and follow the directions VERY carefully. Even a slight mistake will result in failure.
1. Read the manual
2. If you have a problem you can get specific help on the IRC or mailing list for LSF. Post exactly what you have done and the errors you get.
Good luck

Version of linux with wine preinstalled and download link pleasee?

Q. hey
Could somebody please tell me if there is a version of Linux with wine preinstalled as i need wine to be able to install my wireless adaptor on Ubtuntu. if there is another way to install it could somebody please tell me. If not is there another version of linux with wine preinstalled that i can download.

Thanks for taking the time to read my question.

A. as far as i know wine is what u use for installing software not drivers. you should use ndiswrapper or make sure you're using a distro with the latest stable kernel release... linux seems to be getting better all the time with oob wireless support, you just need to stay updated.
try sabayon 3.5 with kde, very easy to use gentoo based distro with everything installed (including wine and ndiswrapper) and hopefully it will recognize your card with no hassle...

How to put 2moons onto linux ubuntu?
Q. I have a question, i tried to install 2moons onto linux with wine, everything worked untill the end, nothing installed. Is there some other software or a way i have to run it through terminal to make it work?

A. if at all there was any possibility through wine, crossover would have done it. But looks like it doesn't work with crossover (http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?forum=1;app_id=3562;mhl=28643;msg=28625)

So u can try running it in a windows inside Virtualbox. But directX may not work that great.

Can Windows viruses run in a Linux OS through Wine?
Q. I have Linux Mint 7 Gloria, and I tested a malicious script (fork bomb) to see if it would adversely effect the computer, and it did crash. Could other malicious scrips meant to harm Windows harm Linux in Wine? If so, should I consider installing virus protection in Wine?

A. The way Wine works, it create a software version of Windows within Linux. A Windows virus might be able to run without that environment (assuming the files it attacks are being simulated in Wine). However as soon as you stop Wine, you would kill the virus. When you reload Wine the virus would not longer be working. (Assuming you are not running Wine as Root).

To learn linux what distro should I use?

Q. I want to become a Mysql DBA therefore I need to learn linux. What distro should i use between: Mandriva 8. Fedora 8 and Unbutu 7.2?
Also I might use a wireless so I don't want any issue and spending days configuring that. I need a user friendly distro to handle my wireless connection & mysql/PHP duties.

A. Considering you will be spending the bulk of your time messing with mysql itself and your linux viewpoint will mostly be a shell command line and an editor, it probably doesn't matter all that much.

Consider that corps almost always play it safe. That means they go with something that provides support. In the US that primarily means Redhat,, Suse, or Ubuntu. Possibly Fedora or Centos.

Check around to see if you wireless card is support. If not, get one that is. Its not like they are a big expense these days.

If I learn Linux for 6 months can I get an entry level job?
Q. I am planning to learn Linux for 6 months ( about 3H per day). Will I be ab;le to find a job as entry level easly or not? If not what should I learn to make it happen ? Thx.

A. "Learning Linux" does not get you a job. If it did, I wouldn't be unemployed. You need to learn more than just how to use various GUIs or a couple bash commands. You need to learn stuff like administrating a web server, secure networking, etc... I've been using Linux a solid year and haven't mastered those yet. You will not learn it in six months only spending a little time on it.

What version do I have to start learning linux?
Q. Which version do I have to start learning linux? What version is commonly used in the enterprise? Do all Linux versions have the same command? What is the difference between the versions of linux?

A. Any. All.

Redhat, Debian, and Ubuntu are common in enterprises. CentoOS is a free version of Redhat.

How to save file to desktop using Linux commands.?

Q. I am a beginner to Linux commands. I use SSH to connect to a Linux server. What command can I use to save a text file on the server to my desktop? Example?

A. From your desktop, fire up a terminal, or use Cygwin if you're under Windows (make sure you have installed the openssh packages) :

scp <your_user_name>@<server_name>:<path to remote file> <path to local dir/file>

Enter your password, and you're done :)

Are you suppose to use different linux distros if you have different purposes?
Q. Or can all linux distro do almost the same if you know the terminal command or scripts? For example if i wanted to do some penetration test with back track but i want to surf the wow anonymously with incognito? Do i have to do them seperately or can i kinda combine them together in one.

A. Terminal commands in almost all Linux distributions are the same commands. Penetration Testing (Forensic) Linux distributions do not make a very good desktop, for everyday use. It doesn't make very much sense to do it on your own hard drive. In most Linux distributions, I believe in the package management program you can find anonymous browsing software to install. And yes one Linux in general can be over bloated with software to your desire.

How can I use hping3 to do a port scan?
Q. When I used Hping3 in linux or windows it can only scan a localhost. Is it possible to scan a remote network? What is the Linux and Windows terminal command for portscanning remote networks?

A. There's no universal program for scanning networks. The best tool to do this from a command line would probably be nmap. nmap is not included with Windows and is not standard in all Linux distributions, but is available in most repositories.

How do I protect my self from getting introuble from downloading off pirate bay and using utorrent on Linux.?

Q. how do I protect my self from getting introuble from downloading off pirate bay and using utorrent on Linux.

A. LULZ!

For being a GNU/Linux user you are pretty ignorant of how data networks acutally work. The fact is, the only way to protect yourself is totally hiding your IP address, but by totally hiding your IP address, data frames from torrent seeders have no idea where to go to end up on your hard drive.

In short, tough luck, anything/anyone at all that claims to protect your privacy in that regard is lying to you.

What are the benefits of a Linux operating system?
Q. I've used Windows and and Mac operating systems, but never Linux. Are there any benefits to having a Linux operating system? Are there any disadvantages? Are they more likely to contract a virus?

A. A more informed user primary benefit.

Quicker more efficient system with less overhead and shit loads of free software. other beni

It won't make you a sandwich disadvantange.

Much less likely to get a virus, and if it does odds are it won't affect your machine but if you do get one you install Linux with a seperate home partition.

so when you have to format you just format your root partition.

Just for the record a Java/Flash/pdf buffer overflow attack can do just as much damage as a virus or more and is cross platform.

Typically these types of crap is put in pron and stuff people like to steal ie P2P over vuze or utorrent and stuff like that.

Most Linux users still Dual boot, just like allot of mac users boot camp.

Best place to start with Linux is to get Ubuntu and run the live Cd and see if you like it, you can also test your drivers running the live cd.

If you use Ubuntu you will probably need Ubuntu restricted extras from synaptic and a bunch of other stuff

You might run into problems with wireless drivers

How can i install utorrent linux version?
Q. Ok ive just installed linux and i don't like utorrent transmission client i want utorrent
I mean how to install it no where to find it

A. why not try ktorrent, its in your software manager,
so is azureus,

all you need to do is enable them

I use a wireless hotspot for internet. How do I get Linux to connect to this hotspot?

Q. My ISP supports Windows, and the Mac OS, but not Linux.
I know that Chrome book's are Linux basically, but the machine is supported. I want to simply install Linux on a machine I already own, and connect to my hotspot.

A. Hi
Trustthebear69
He is asking about linux.
"Many ISP wireless will not give this information out to people."
To find your wireless key if not on the router just google "web interface for your router make" ie web interface netgear router
Log on to your router using the default user and password and you will find the information.

"My ISP supports Windows, and the Mac OS, but not Linux."
This means that the ISP will not offer advise on Linux.

As long as linux distro detects your wireless chip in your pc then it will connect when you select the name of your router and supply the security wireless key.

Google for the forum of your Linux Distro for instructions.

What do you download from the chrome store to be able to get java?
Q. I have an Acer Chromebook and i want java for like oovoo and some other apps. I understand you download the Linux java download. But when i download that it says i have to download an app that can open java. What is that app called?

A. Chrome devices have Flash support built-in, but they do not support Java or Silverlight. If you need Java, Silverlight, or other plug-in support, there are virtualization and remoting options you can use for Chrome devices. See the chapter on Remote Access and Virtualization in the Chrome Devices for Education Technical Planning Guide: http://www.google.com/support/enterprise/static/chromeos/docs/admin/en/chrome_devices_for_edu.pdf

What are the benefits of using Google Chrome and what are the benefits of using Internet Explorer 9?
Q. My friend told me to switch over to Google Chrome, which i did. I am a Internet Explorer user and I upgraded Internet Explorer to version 9 and it seems like its the same as Google Chrome. What would be the benefits of the two?
Well internet explorer 9 too shows most visited web sites and is insanely fast lol. I guess one point would be security since internet explorer is a widely used browser.

A. Firefox 4 is even faster than IE and Chrome, over 9 million downloads in two days and it's available for Windows XP, which IE 9 isn't.

Chrome and IE isn't nearly as customizable as Firefox, Firefox has tens of thousands of add-ons, persona, themes etc.

Another great thing is it's available for Windows, OS X and Linux, one can auto-sync so all versions of Firefox are the same across different hardware. :)

Also with Firefox you don't have to worry if Microsoft, Apple or Google is spying on you, the code is open for people to see. (and improve on)

And Firefox with add-on's runs extremely fast on single core computers with 2.3 GHz and a mere 512K of RAM under Linux, so the "memory" issues is because of Windows bloat, PC vendor installed junk and anti-malware, not Firefox.

I use Windows in VM all the time, it always needs more memory than anything else I run. Nearly 2GB, that's with the eye candy turned way down. Just about all new Windows PC's today need their RAM bumped up right from the gate, especially after updating.

What are the benifets of linux, what are its major differences from windowsXP?

Q. also i am planning on running a hl2 steam server (counter-strike source) any tips for that?

A. Main difference being that Linux is open source and therefore you can do anything you want with it.
I think stability and security are the main practical differences.

Here's some comparisons:

How can I live stream an event with reliable delivery?
Q. The institution that I work in needs to allow its viewers to view an live event and I guess video streaming is the solution we are looking for. I have exposure to Windows but not much at linux. Is there any reliable way of video streaming using Windows and any tutorials on how to stream a video would be appreciated.

PS: I tried VLC but doesn't look like the solution we are looking for, some thing advance would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

A. Yes, infact I believe that Microsoft Windows has one of the best solutions for video streaming. It is called IIS Smooth Streaming and IIS Live Smooth Streaming and as I see you are broadcasting a live event, probably an input from a DV Camera.

If you have a Windows Vista / 7 PC and Microsoft Expression Encoder all you need to do is to download a web player (Silverlight) and doing some tweaks here and there and you will end up with a video streaming solution that is comparable with the industry. Expression Encoder Pro is available free of charge without the H264 codec and could be obtained from their site (doesn't show up easy) other wise its just below 200$ in price and is worth it.

I wrote an article on IIS Live Smooth Streaming, on my industrial training experience and hope it will be helpful to you: http://ziyan.mozeej.com/2011/11/iis-live-smooth-steaming-professional-way-of-streaming-videos.html

The article contains a video tutorial on how to do it. I use the same computer as the encoder, server and end user. You could use appropriate IPs and do it in a multiple computer environment.

If you need any more assistance, drop an e mail to my profile at FB: http://www.facebook.com/mzjdeen

Old Gateway laptop making a weird noise then freezing, any ideas as to what it is?
Q. I have a Gateway P-7805u FX laptop that I just got yesterday from my neighbor. The laptop was running fine until last night when I was trying to install Steam and it made a weird humming/hissing noise. My neighbor said something about the HDD before giving me the laptop but I'm not sure, not really a tech guy. But anyways, when it starts to make the noise it'll gradually get louder then after about a minute the laptop will completely freeze. Any insight and help would be appreciated

A. I'd suspect the fan seizing up, followed by overheating. I've resurrected a lot of them by squirting WD-40 into the bearing (after peeling off the dust-cap sticker). You'll have to pull the case apart to do this.

If it's the hard drive, you can run a Linux CD and bypass the HDD to see if that's what is wrong. Try Puppy, Bodhi or Rescatux, which all fit on a CD. Puppy runs in memory.

Why do you think the Linux community donates its time to supporting the adoption of Linux?

Q. I have been working with Linux for a short time now and was wondering why people would donate time and resources to support Linux. Please list any sources that you have that can give more information on this topic please.

A. Well, large companies like IBM contribute to Linux for their own reasons. They want a lean, mean, robust server OS, and Linux is ideal because they have their own in-house developers tweak it for their own uses. That's probably the biggest reason that Linux is a very good server OS: Because career programmers work on it as their job.

Linux on the desktop has some smaller companies behind it that may try to sell support for it, but it also gets contributions from other programmers in their spare time. You don't see many people who work on Linux as their actual job outside of the aforementioned large companies. People contribute because they want to, or perhaps because they're lifeless neckbeards with nothing to live for beyond coding for open source (certainly not all contributors fit that category, but there are definitely a lot of those guys in the FOSS movement). That's a big reason why Linux on the desktop hasn't really gone anywhere. There's no real advertising campaign, no big push beyond grassroots, no big reason to switch over to an OS that may not even have real support beyond user forums or possibly email.

What is the best Linux password cracker program?
Q. I somehow got access to the shadow password file. I found the list of users in encrypted form. What is the best cracker program out there to crack?

A. You should not "Trade passwords, product decryption keys, or programs."

What is the procedure to install Linux, tell me the entire procedure for installation and the after procedure?
Q. What is the procedure to install Linux, tell me the entire procedure for installation and the after procedure, what to do and what not to do while installing and even after installation, and what is mounting.

A. Here are some options for installing or trying out Linux

Option One (Full installation)

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 8 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 9.10 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Linux Mint 8 Helena User Guide
http://www.scribd.com/doc/23787138/Linux-Mint-8-Helena-User-Guide

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 8 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 8 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

Option Two (Install Ubuntu inside Windows XP and Vista)

Installing Ubuntu as a dual-boot with Windows without partitioning
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wubi

You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the Wubi installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Ubuntu (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Ubuntu is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Ubuntu

Ubuntu 9.10 Download
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) User Guide

Linux Mint 7 has a similar feature called mint4win and the directions given above for Wubi can be followed (mint4win is not available for Linux Mint 8)

Ubuntu 9.10 and Linux Mint 7 can also be run straight from the LiveCD without touching your Hard drive

Option Three (LiveCD)

Here the possibilities are endless as you can try out as many different Linux distros. until you find the one thats right for you DISTROWATCH.COM gives full listings (second lists the major distributions)

Linux users - does the Linux firewall block/make it difficult to watch video or film online?

Q. I am learning about Linux because Im thinking of changing my OS to Linux and trying to find out some pros and cons. I sometimes stream film from sites or watch you tube and Im wondering if Linux will interfere with this.

A. Linux won't really need a firewall. I run a number of Linux machines without any security software and they're fine. Linux is a lot more secure than Windows (Or Mac OS, for that matter), and because it's not used as widely, less viruses are produced for it.

The only issue you might have is that Flash isn't very well supported in Linux - you won't get very good frame rates in full screen, high quality video. Still, if your computer's powerful enough, it should be fine.

Linux is a fantastic platform, which is rapidly becoming more and more user friendly. I urge you to try out Ubuntu, from http://www.ubuntu.com. From there, you can create a Live CD, so you can test Ubuntu without installing it!

Should http traffic be blocked to enable non transparent proxy?
Q. Hello everyone,
I would like to know if HTTP traffic should be blocked on Linux based firewalls to enable non transparent proxy (ie automatic redirection to a login page when a user tries to open any webpage).
Thanks...
P.S:The firewall I'm using is ENDIAN firewall.

A. I think you're more interested in port forwarding than blocking in this case.

Say if I've got squid running on my firewall box and it's accepting connections on port 8080, Web browsers are still going to send requests off to port 80 for HTTP and port 443 for HTTPS requests. It's just the way they work (unless you override it with the :portno at the end of the domain name).

It's the firewalls job to redirect port 80 requests to port 8080 where the proxy is listening and then the proxy can handle the request on behalf of all the hosts you've got on your LAN.

How to connect to fedora server 2.0 from win xp using puTTY?
Q. i have a fedora 2.0 server and i want to connect it from my windows xp. i can connect to another linux firewall on same network but i cant accces the fedora 2.0 server why? i use puTTY 0.60. plz help

A. What happens when you try? There are lots of different possibilities, but without knowing what goes wrong, it's hard to say.

1) An SSH server might not be running.

2) The server might only accept SSH1 connections and you might be attempting an SSH2 server with puTTY.

3) The SSH server might be running, but a firewall or TCP connection rule may be disallowing your connection.

What's the latest version of Red Hat Linux? Where can i download free video tutorials to learn the basics.?

Q. I am in a plan to do system administration and as per the suggestion given by all my friends, i have decided to go towards Linux operating system and so i am interested in knowing about the latest release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and ofcourse the free video tutorial which would help me to learn the basics of Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating systems as i am totally new to it.

A. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5

Get it here:

How can i get 'RED HAT' LINUX for free? Can i get a cd for free by post?or should i download it from the net?
Q. Can i get a CD containing 'RED HAT' LINUX by post, free of any charge as it is an open source software?? Or should i download it from the internet? Please give the details........ ( i want the red hat version of linux itself)
can you give me the links...., so that i can get them?

A. You seem to know the name RedHat but not enough about it to not ask this question. To the person who said that RedHat no longer exists and then turned around and said it is RedHat Enterprise, doesn't that sound a little silly? To answer the question you asked, YES AND NO. No you cannot get RedHat for free, it went commercial quite awhile ago. However they continued on with the home-user version renaming it Fedora to distinguish it from the commercial version. And what exactly do you mean "...free of any charge as it is an open source software??" Where did you get the idea that open-source is synonymous with free? I bet you've heard about the free software movement and think all open-source software is free. The GPL ( http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html ) states that a program with this license is copy-lefted. This means it is free to redistribute and change the software as you see fit, even to sell it (yes, sell someone else's program for your own profit as long as you leave the license intact and allow the people that buy or receive the software from you to do the exact same thing. I hope that this clarifies things a little for you. I didn't mean to sound so harsh, it was not my intention.

How can I build a Linux Distro?

Q. I have downloaded the latest stable kernel. How can I make a linux distro from scratch? What do I need?

A. Linux From Scratch (LFS) is a project that provides you with step-by-step instructions for building your own custom Linux system, entirely from source code.
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/

Alternatively, you can easily customize your own Slax linux live right from your browser. If you are new to Linux you probably want to start with something like that.

What would be my best choice for a linux distro?
Q. i have a dell inspiron 1525. what would be my best choice for a linux distro? could someone maybe point me to a website with the most amount of info on the subject? i'm new to linux and would definately want to learn more about it.

A. I'd suggest Ubuntu or Linuxmint.

http://www.ubuntu.com/

http://www.linuxmint.com/

Ubuntu ought to be the best linux distro around.

Linuxmint is easier on beginner who just make transition from windows to linux

Well, i don't want to stuff you with bunch of confusing information.

Just download the image file from the web-site. Burn it onto a blank CD and boot live from it (it means you get to use it without messing up anything)

For ubuntu, you can try WUBI if you're afraid of repartitioning and mess up everything

What is the best linux distro for a Dell Optiplex GX1?
Q. I have a Dell Optiplex GX1 Intel Celeron 1.39 GHz (256MB RAM). I need a linux distro that meets its requirements and that is reliable and fast.

Thanks Ã

A. Hi

Ajenthan
please read the question
"(256MB RAM)"
I don't think that "Fedora is good Linux distro since it is fast and quick. Ubuntu is another good one" would run on that spec

look at puppy linux as a frugal or a full install.
Go to the puppy forum and do a search or ask about low ram PC.

How can I tell if my Linux install is in its own partition?

Q. I have a Gateway netbook with Windows 7 starter. I installed the Ubuntu 10 version of Linux. But I don't think it installed on it's its own partition, because it never asked me about the size or anything of a partition or which partition to use. So, I followed some instructions on the internet to put Linux on its own partition, but how do I know its really on there?

A. It did, but if it will make you feel better, do this:

Boot into Linux.
Open a console shell
Type 'df -h'

The partitions will be displayed. The information on the right will tell you the mount point. The one marked '/host' will be the windows partition. On the left the host partition will be /dev/sda1. All the rest are you Linux partitions.

If you want to know more about /dev/sda1, type 'fdisk -l' (be careful with fdisk).

How do you determine what Linux file system your using?
Q. When you log onto a Linux system and get to the command prompt, how can you determine which of the many file systems supported in Linux you are using? Is there a command that will identify it?

A. Use fsck with the N option which just show what would have been done, but also show you what type of filesystem it is.

fsck -N /dev/(device-name)

e.g.

fsck -N /dev/hdc2

The 'mount' command wont help if the filesystem isn't mounted, and looking in /etc/fstab wont help because you cant be sure that information can be trusted.

How can i access a RAID partition from Linux?
Q. I am playing around with Mandriva, a distribution of Linux. I have windows installed on a separate RAID 0+1 setup and i want to access my files from Mandriva. How can i do this? I'm reading about samba shares but i'm not so sure I understand. Is there a directory i can just type in to access my windows partition?

A. Just mount the partition.
