How do I install a program on UNIX OS?

Q. I would like to know how to install a program on Linux without having to use the software center tool, I want to install it from scratch by myself but the only issue I have is that I dont know how. That is the only thing that is holding my horses from switching to Linux or Fedora. If you could write on a step by step format it would be better for me to understand.

A. You unzip the source archive, then go to a terminal and enter:

cd [enter the location of where you put it here]
./configure
make
sudo make install

Or you may mean downloading rpm files manually, which unless you can't find what you want (you'd go to http://rpmfind.net ) is not recommended as they could've been tampered with and you also won't get updates for that package.

If you want a good amount of packages then switch to a Debian-based distro.

How can I crack the user password on a Win2000 account?
Q. We have here at our church a donated computer on which a user account has expired. The donor, the original administrator, does not remember his password unfortunately... There are quite some important files behind this user account. I know about Linux installation etc but can't do that (don't have Linux). Starting in safe mode did not work either. Is there some program I can use?
Thanks! x D-J in L.A.

A. I have used the Offline NT Password & Registry editor at work a few times after somebody forgot the admin password.
It works really well, just follow instruction on the link below, file download is near bottom of page.
It looks alot more complicated than it really is........trust me!
All you need is to unzip and write it to floppy disk using the bat file supplied in the zip file.
Although it says NT it works on NT/2000/XP (looks into the computers SAM file which holds the passwords)

Hope this helps.

How do I install Firefox in a Linux computer?
Q. I downloaded firefox and I can't install it I open the file but I don't see any file that says Install! and it's one of those tar.bz files and I'm new to linux so I have no idea how to do it

A. Your best option is to use your Distro's "Package Manager" to install your software, rather than downloading it and installing it manually. The package manager will handle all the dependencies and related packages for you.

In Ubuntu (Each distro varies, so I'll just use this as an example, since it is the most popular distro.) you go up to the top of the screen, System, Administration, Synaptic package manager. You can type firefox in the search box, find the package that says "Firefox" click the box, tell it to install, then hit the apply button at the top. Firefox and all the related packages will automatically be downloaded and installed.

If you are using a different distro, the package manager may be called something else... It might even be labeled as add/remove programs...

If you happen to be using Gentoo, you will open up a command prompt, su to root and type:

emerge -av mozilla-firefox

Almost any other distro will have a graphical package manager already on the system that is very similar to the ubuntu manager. The exact layout and where it is found vary a little, but you shouldn't have any real problems.

To actually answer your question, however, to decompress (unzip) your file, you would open a command prompt, go to the directory where the file is (/home/"username"/Desktop if you downloaded it to your desktop) and type tar -zvxf filename.tar.bz This will extract the files into a folder caleld filename on your desktop. You can cd into that directory and look for an "installer" program and type ./installerprogramname to install. You will probably have to su to root to do so... Using the package manager saves you all this trouble, PLUS the auto-update on the system will keep firefox up to date as far as security patches are concerned.

Whats are some differences between a laptop and a tablet?

Q. I know that a tablet is touch screen when you swivel it over, but are there any other differences? I want to know because the price difference is a lot.

A. The biggest differences between a laptop and tablet systems is that usually laptops have better speed CPU's and larger Hard drives. Now some tablet system run Window based software and others don't and you can even get a laptop with Linux.

I believe that Laptops are better designed then tablets in terms of handling you dropping them plus the usage. Because tablets for the most part touch and tap controlled you will see damage to the screen area much faster then a laptop. I think you have more flexibility with laptops as well since you add accessories much easier and software which some tablets won't run well you can use them for more things where tablets are designed more for kind of reading.

If you want to rotate your screen just buy a monitor that will allow that option which some laptops have on them.

That's some of the reason I like, hope that helps you out.

Is there any Virtual Machine for mac that supports 3D acceleration?

Q. I want to have Visual Effects enabled on my Linux Virtual Machine (Ubuntu).

Good answer gets 5 stars!

A. No. There currently aren't any virtualiziers on the market which can emulate OpenGL. VMWare Fusion is able to emulate Direct3d for windows virtual machines, but it doesn't have support for the OpenGL renderer needed by compositing window managers in Linux.

How do I change the command line prompt to show just the login id.?
Q. This is on a linux virtual machine?

A. The easiest way to do it for all users is to edit the file /etc/profile.

There should be some lines in that file for setting PS1, which is the primary shell prompt. You can edit or add lines like this:

PS1='\u@\h:\$ '
export PS1

This will make the default prompt this, with a space after the dollar sign:

user@hostname $

How do I create user accounts using a script that reads a list of names from a file?
Q. It creates user accounts for each name. This is on a linux virtual machine.

A. You'll have to write a shell script that reads the names and information from the file one line at a time, then pipes it to a tool like adduser, which will then add the user information to the appropriate system files. This has to be done as root or with admin privileges.

How to get rid of viruses for good?

Also is it possible for electronic media like DVD players, guitar processors, musical keyboards to get VIRUS INFECTED if they are connected to infected computers?

A. Don't format ur pendrive with windows format. Instead use "HP USB Disk Format tool". Else delete unnecessary files on linux. MUST- use a FIREWALL(Windows Firewall is a Trash anyway) and a good antivirus.

How do you boot linux from a flash drive?
Q. I am looking for the best linux os distro that could boot straight from my flash drive.

Something like knoppix but for flash.

To intall to USB drive:
First, boot up your computer from the DSL livecd, frugal, or USB-frugal. Note that it is not possible to do a USB install, or any other kind of install from a DSL Embedded system.

In the Fluxbox menu, go Apps >> Tools >> Install to USB Pendrive and choose either USB-ZIP emulation or USB-HDD emulation, depending on what is supported by your computer's bios.

How do you purchase Windows Server Licenses?

Q. I wish to purchase a VPS server and I wish to use Windows Server on it. I will probably buy 3-4 VPS for different projects. The servers will be with no OS. How do I obtain a license for the windows server and how much is it?

Thank you!

A. on a vps why would you want to buy windows ?

windows server is only valid for that one virtual machine and as you can see by the price here

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/pricing.aspx

is it really worth it ?

i suggest you use an enterprise linux or server linux,
centos and fedora are both free

What Linux distro should I use to set up a home server?
Q. Does anyone have any knowledge on a distribution to use to set up a home server where multiple user accounts are stored and files are stored?

A. I use Fedora 8 64 bit edition. 347 days of up time so far. Can't say that for any Mac or Windows system. I like Kubuntu for a desktop more. Mostly because of the eye candy.

Which operating system is best for server and security centos or redhat or any other os available?
Q. We need a highly secured operating system. So which one is best redhat or fedora or centos?
And also which is bug free?

A. Probably RedHat (who also provided most of the money for the development of Fedora). Security is down to the system admins - if they aren't very good then neither will be your security. Bugs happen, nothing much you can do about them except know how to either fix them or get around them.

2> .deb, .rpm format, it is format for debian or redhat linux which can installed by their package manager

3>the most easy and best method for beginner is to use ubuntu package manager, search for program , let it download and then install.

A. 1 Ubuntu
2 Fedora
3 openSUSE
4 Mint
5 Debian
6 Mandriva
7 PCLinuxOS
8 Puppy
9 Sabayon
10 Arch

This is the list from http://www.distrowatch.com which states the most downloaded distros out there. Granted these are just desktop distros and I expect that both Debian and RHEL (Red Hat) make up the majority of the Linux servers out there.

What book i shud buy for linux ubuntu if i have never work with linux before?

Q. What book i shud buy for linux ubuntu if i have never work with linux before?

A. I'd recommend the book written by the Ubuntu team:

http://www.phptr.com/bookstore/product.asp?isbn=0132435942&rl=1

You can find cheaper prices on sites like eBay:

http://search.ebay.com/official-ubuntu-book_W0QQfromZR41

Since you've never worked with Linux, I'd suggest you either download or order a free Ubuntu "live" CD. You can run Ubuntu from the CD without actually installing it on your computer. This gives you a chance to work with it. At the end of the day, take the CD out and your computer will never know you were using Ubuntu.

What are some fun and educational software programs for an 11 year old girl?
Q. I'm looking for some good games or programs that I could purchase on a disk and download on my desktop so that my 11 year old girl can play and learn at the same time. I'm especially looking for games that will enhance her math skills, but would also like to find something for spelling and grammar, and history as well. Do you know of any such games? I want it to be a lot of fun so that she just thinks she's playing and having fun, but really she's learning in the process. Thanks!

A. Yahoo won't allow more than ten links to be sent so you will have to repair those that I destroyed with a space between the 'http' and the colon

Edubuntu is the only real environment for young learners and I don't say that lightly. Lots of stuff can now be used in windows so I hope you find this helpful.

After all that- read this: If you are running Microsoft Windows or MacOSX you consider:

1. installing a Linux distribution or running a so called liveCD, or [wubi]
2. waiting for a while, since the next version of KDE (KDE 4) will most likely run on Microsoft Windows and MacOSX as well.

If you don't get some ideas from all that I will have to scream so lie if you have to. Email with any questions and excuse this huge answer but it is hard to investigate if you aren't familiar with where to look and I need all this info anyway. (I have saved me a copy of the links)

I want to make absolutely sure that I said why I got to doing the KDE searches etc. When I went to the first and then the second sites, I realised that it says a lot of the packages are available to use in windows (some with reduced functionality) so look out for that if you want one or two apps more than the others. And; investigate Linux a little. You may find you like it best. Ask friends, maybe.

Well, good luck educating your daughter lol and
Good night

How do i make videos on youtube?
Q. I know how to make videos on youtube wit just words and still pictures but how do you make videos on there with parts from a tv show or clips from a cartoon or anime with custom music or not with custom music? i see other people doing it all the time but i cant figure it out. can someone please tell me specificly how to do it? thank you

A. TO MAKE VIDEO:

(capturing Tv clips is in the end)

Equipment REQUIRED (for computer uploading):
1. Camera (important, and must be able to connect to computer)
2. Cable to connect camera to computer
3. Video Editing software (to put clips together in)
4. Internet (obviously)
5. A/V to camera cable

Useful FREE Programs:
1. Jahshaka (free special effects program For Windows, Mac, Linux)
2. Windows Movie maker (video editor, free in Windows)
3. IMovie (video editor, free in Macs)
4. Cinelerra (Advance video editor for Linux and Macs)
5. LiVES (Advance video editor for Linux and Macs)
6. Virtual Dub (video editor for Windows)

ALL great programs!!! tutorials on how to use each are all over the web.
A LOT of youtube videos out there too.

Importing and Editing Video:
After you've recorded your video connect your camera to your computer.

CAMCORDERS usually use firewire cables

DIGITAL CAMERAS come with their own cable to connect along with their own instructions on how to import files.

Import the files into your computer. for Camcorders (using tape) you will most likely need to use a video editing program to record the files from the Tape to your computer using a firewire cable. Then press record from camera on your video editing program.

Then Edit the files together using One or Several of the programs I listed above. OR with a program you have purchased.

Export the file. (WMV, and Mpeg files are recommended)

TO RECORD TV AND CARTOONS FROM TV, etc.

FROM TV:

for this you will need a special cable for your camera that can allow you to capture videos from A/V input jacks (RED, YELLOW, and WHITE JACKS... ie. Tv inputs, VCR inputs, etc.)
>check your local Circuit City or Radioshack they should have it...

Once connected you should be able to see and hear whats going on on your TV from your camera screen. CLICK record to start recording the parts you want.

FROM INTERNET:

You can download files off limewire (or FROSTWIRE *much faster) and cut out the parts you want for your video. Or you can do the same using youtube, be aware that the quailty won't be great, by using Zamzar (.com), File2HD (.com, or any online video converter.

PLEASE NOTE THOUGH THAT DOING THESE PAST TWO ACTIONS ARE ILLEGAL AND ARE NOT RECOMMENDED.

A. I think I know what your trying to say. You want to run a linux command from the the Java Runtime Environment. This command should work.
Runtime.getRuntime().exec(String command);

Q. I'm tired to use the "top" and search around for the PID of a program that I know is running on a remote terminal, left open by someone else, and that I want to kill. I wonder if there is a linux command that would return the PID of only that program.

A. ps aux | grep processname

Q. One way to do it is install a linux virtual machine on my windows (using vmware/vpc) and use it to mount the NFS partition. Will it work? Is there any other way? Some other software.
I don't have admin access to the partition. Basically, I dont have any support from my sys admin too. (hypothetically :)

A. First, you can try Start->Run and enter //servername

Do you have admin access to the Linux machine? You could install a Samba server to it and mount it from there.

What are the down sides of using a virtual machine instead of a host machine?
Q. Currently I'm using windows 7 and wanted to install Linux Mint. I thought of using a virtual machine because i don't want to reboot too much. So does the performance go down if i use a virtual machine? How much of the memory should i dedicate to the virtual machine?

A. It's OK to get a quick look at a different OS, but I wouldn't recommend it for long term use.
Your 'virtual machine' uses virtual hardware for important things like your sound and graphics card, so you'll never see it how it's supposed to be.

You'd be better of using a 'wubi' type install (called mint4win in earlier versions of Mint, but sadly not available in the latest version) Wubi installs the Linux OS inside a Windows folder and automatically adjusts your Windows boot loader. You do need to reboot to use it, but you get the full power of your system with the real sound and graphics card used - and obviously all the RAM too.

Ubuntu and a lot of it's clones can all utilise the 'wubi' method. It's the ideal way to run Linux for beginners. No partitioning or messing with boot loaders, which are the main sticking points for most newcomers. It's much faster than a 'live' CD and it uses your real hardware, unlike a virtual install

Whats the difference between Linux and Windows?
Q. Whats the difference between Linux and Windows?
Would you highly reccomend Linux?
What are some of the features?

A. 1: Full access vs. no accessHaving access to the source code is probably the single most significant difference between Linux and Windows. The fact that Linux belongs to the GNU Public License ensures that users (of all sorts) can access (and alter) the code to the very kernel that serves as the foundation of the Linux operating system. You want to peer at the Windows code? Good luck. Unless you are a member of a very select (and elite, to many) group, you will never lay eyes on code making up the Windows operating system.

#2: Licensing freedom vs. licensing restrictionsAlong with access comes the difference between the licenses. Iâm sure that every IT professional could go on and on about licensing of PC software. But letâs just look at the key aspect of the licenses (without getting into legalese). With a Linux GPL-licensed operating system, you are free to modify that software and use and even republish or sell it (so long as you make the code available). Also, with the GPL, you can download a single copy of a Linux distribution (or application) and install it on as many machines as you like. With the Microsoft license, you can do none of the above. You are bound to the number of licenses you purchase, so if you purchase 10 licenses, you can legally install that operating system (or application) on only 10 machines.

#3: Online peer support vs. paid help-desk supportThis is one issue where most companies turn their backs on Linux. But itâs really not necessary. With Linux, you have the support of a huge community via forums, online search, and plenty of dedicated Web sites. And of course, if you feel the need, you can purchase support contracts from some of the bigger Linux companies (Red Hat and Novell for instance).

However, when you use the peer support inherent in Linux, you do fall prey to time.
On the other side of the coin is support for Windows.

#4: Full vs. partial hardware supportOne issue that is slowly becoming nonexistent is hardware support. Years ago, if you wanted to install Linux on a machine you had to make sure you hand-picked each piece of hardware or your installation would not work 100 percent. I can remember, back in 1997-ish, trying to figure out why I couldnât get Caldera Linux or Red Hat Linux to see my modem. After much looking around, I found I was the proud owner of a Winmodem. So I had to go out and purchase a US Robotics external modem because that was the one modem I knew would work. This is not so much the case now. You can grab a PC (or laptop) and most likely get one or more Linux distributions to install and work nearly 100 percent. But there are still some exceptions. For instance, hibernate/suspend remains a problem with many laptops, although it has come a long way.

With Windows, you know that most every piece of hardware will work with the operating system. Of course, there are times (and I have experienced this over and over) when you will wind up spending much of the day searching for the correct drivers for that piece of hardware you no longer have the install disk for. But you can go out and buy that 10-cent Ethernet card and know itâll work on your machine (so long as you have, or can find, the drivers). You also can rest assured that when you purchase that insanely powerful graphics card, you will probably be able to take full advantage of its power.

#5: Command line vs. no command lineNo matter how far the Linux operating system has come and how amazing the desktop environment becomes, the command line will always be an invaluable tool for administration purposes. Nothing will ever replace my favorite text-based editor, ssh, and any given command-line tool. I canât imagine administering a Linux machine without the command line. But for the end user â not so much. You could use a Linux machine for years and never touch the command line. Same with Windows. You can still use the command line with Windows, but not nearly to the extent as with Linux. And Microsoft tends to obfuscate the command prompt from users. Without going to Run and entering cmd (or command, or whichever it is these days), the user wonât even know the command-line tool exists. And if a user does get the Windows command line up and running, how useful is it really?

#6: Centralized vs. noncentralized application installationThe heading for this point might have thrown you for a loop. But letâs think about this for a second. With Linux you have (with nearly every distribution) a centralized location where you can search for, add, or remove software. Iâm talking about package management systems, such as Synaptic. With Synaptic, you can open up one tool, search for an application (or group of applications), and install that application without having to do any Web searching (or purchasing).

Windows has nothing like this. With Windows, you must know where to find the software you want to install, download the software (or put the CD into your machine), and run setup.exe o

Is there a better distro that will not make the game so choppy? (Like emulate windows drivers) also is arch linux, gentoo, or saybian good for this game or 3d drivers in general?

A. The choice of distro does not really affect performance to that degree; the presence of suitable drivers does. You may wish to try installing the proprietary drivers for the video cards.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI

The choice of KDE or GNOME should not really impact gaming, though you may need to disable Compiz or compositing in KDE temporarily. Arch Linux and Gentoo do not ship proprietary drivers by default. Sabayon does include them, but that is because of a difference in opinion / politics, not technical.

What is the best lightweight Linux distro for my computer?
Q. I have a Compaq Deskpro EP/SB with Pentium II 333MHz processor (256MB RAM). I need a lightweight Linux operating system that is fast and reliable. I have tired Peppermint OS but it is too slow on this computer. I don't like Puppy Linux, nor Macpup. I need something different.

Thanks :)

A. Hi
With your processor and amount of ram you have to go with a puppy derivative. Puplets
http://puppylinux.org/main/Puplet%20for%20special%20features.htm

DSL (Dam small Linux)
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/

Tinycore.
Tinycore requires alot of work.
http://distro.ibiblio.org/tinycorelinux/

Bodhi Linux
http://www.bodhilinux.com/

Gentoo Linux
http://www.gentoo.org/

Lubuntu.
http://lubuntu.net/

Look on distrowatch and do a search for small linux distros.

To be frank puppy has the best support of all the medium Linux distros via the murga forums.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/

you wont get a snazzy desktop to run with those computer specs.

What linux distribution do you recommend?
Q. If you want to learn how to adminster Linux systems properly, not simply for use as a Windows replacement?

A. This are the most common distros. I DON'T RECOMMEND ANY OF THIS to learning linux at sysadmin level:
Red hat (or centos or fedora)
Ubuntu (or Mint)
Suse

All those distros are designed to be user friendly and easy.

You need a distro that keeps configuration plain and simple, instead of trying to hide it with a nice gui.
I RECOMMEND YOU:
Arch Linux
Gentoo
linux from scratch

I have used archlinux myself, and I can tell you is really easy to learn AND does not hide any of its configuration using guis.

Archlinux has a GREAT wiki, so, even if you are going to configure all by yourself, you'll have great step-by-step guides.
I don't recommend you archbang or sabayon, since they hide their configuration, and its not what you want (You want to learn!)

And that's it. I'll leave you with this from the arch linux wiki:

Whereas many GNU/Linux distributions attempt to be more user-friendly, Arch Linux has always been, and shall always remain user-centric.
Arch Linux targets and accommodates competent GNU/Linux users by giving them complete control and responsibility over the system.
Arch Linux users fully manage the system on their own. The system itself will offer little assistance, except for a simple set of maintenance tools that are designed to perfectly relay the user's commands to the system. Arch developers do not expend energy re-inventing GUI system tools; Arch is founded upon sensible design and excellent documentation.
This user-centric design necessarily implies a certain "do-it-yourself" approach to using the Arch distribution. Rather than pursuing assistance or requesting a new feature to be implemented by developers, Arch Linux users have a tendency to solve problems themselves and share the results with the community and development team â a "do first, then ask" philosophy. This is especially true for user-contributed packages found in the Arch User Repository â the official Arch Linux repository for community-maintained packages.

On crunchbang Linux everything is incredibly small and I can't see a thing. Is there any fix?

Q. I'm unable to do anything with my crunchbang. Please help.

A. Most solutions require that you are able to see a menu item or open a terminal and type a command since you cannot see ANYTHING the only solution is to reinstall it and be aware of any options for font size and video formats when you do.
Good luck

is it possible to update crunchbang linux whilst running it from usb?
Q. i run my crunchbang from usb (to avoid the bothersome choice everytime i turn on my computer) is there any way for the updates to stick whilst running it from the usb?

A. No. I'm guessing that your distribution is running from an image on the USB. You'd have to update a real installation and create a new Live USB image.

And is the choice more bothersome than not being able to keep your distribution up to date?

How can i tell which files a specific process is using in ubuntu?
Q. I am trying to find out where a temp file for a program is being stored. im sure linux has a way of doing this (seemingly?) simple task.

thanks

A. I have 'conky' set up to give me information about top processes as part of my wallpaper - but I think for detail, you can go through GUI or terminal, up to you. You should search for information about conky in Crunchbang forums.

If you prefer mousey answers, then using GUI - open system monitor (add it to your panel, right click and open from there maybe) - processes, and view 'command line'

Problem is that GUI affects your system too much, so better open terminal (install terminator, it's very cool, also install cowsay cos that's really cool too)

type 'htop'

if it isn't installed, your terminal will tell you exactly how to get it ;)

I'm apt to think you'll get my meaning B-)

With terminator, you can actually run HTOP, and you can remove the scrollbar and window border too - and actually have just a display like a widget on your desktop. To move windows with no decoration, you press a modifier (usually ALT and drag with the mouse, but if you had problems with GIMP shortcuts, you should change the function for 'move' window to use 'ctrl+alt')

Ok? anything else? :P

What do I need to know to be a good ethical hacker, books i can read?

Q. What books do you recommend . I want to become a network security specialist one day .I know i need to understand Linux what else to I need to understand ???

A. I don't think even books are going to help you become a good anything, you're not even smart enough to know you should be asking this question in programming, and design. Don't bother asking there either, like I said, nothing is going to help a dummy like you.

business question "antique mall owner needing security camera system" which is the best to buy?
Q. Just trying to get input from someone that has an antique mall of similar business. I want to purchase a camera system that I can set up in "EACH" booth or atleast every other booth. Some can be dummies but I would like for atleast half of them to be the real deal. I ahve heard of dealers using globes and dummy cameras to deter thieves; does this work?
What system would you recommend and please don't say a 10,000 one, I cant afford that at the moment.

A. Hello

Dummy cameras are the worst possible they don't provide security and if someone is injured or claims to be injured in your store they can sue for providing a false sense of security. No professional security installer uses dummy cameras.

Here is a DVR that will work perfectly for you.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/x4s.htm

I would recommend a Standalone DVR as they are more reliable and since they are linux based they are virus ans spy ware free.

The X4S Series DVR is an intelligent and professional CCTV management solution, integrating the latest technology and the most advanced features while maintaining a simple, intuitive, and graphical interface. The X4S Series DVR is a 24/7 turn key solution that meets demanding security needs to suit industrial and commercial applications. The X4S DVR is compatible with the X4 platform, allowing it to act as an IP server, while still remaining a standalone solution and allows you to view your cameras instantly over the internet with a PC or cell phone like the I-phone.

also here is some information on DVR and cameras you may want to read before buying a CCTV system.

Not all DVRs and security equipment are created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVRs you can find the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for.

I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

Many people have the misconception that a PC-Based DVR is simply an off-the-shelf PC with video capture (encoder) cards, display (decoder) cards and some generic OEM software. A true DVR requires years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day. This makes consumer-level hardware inadequate for DVRs which is why Ascendent uses custom-built PCs with performance-level hardware.

My personal favorite DVR is Ascendent X4 series: Ascendentâs Tri-Fusion Hybrid Platform allows for the creation of a true hybrid surveillance system by utilizing the advantages of Analog, Megapixel, and IP technologies for unparalleled customization and expandability.

The X4 also uses the latest H.264/SVC codec offer video substantially better quality,. While its file size sizes is 30% smaller than MPEG-4, 60% smaller than MPEG-2, and exponentially smaller than MJPEG.

File size is crucial to streaming because most DVRâs on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way too much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.

The smaller the files size the more images are able to be sent, and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities, as it also determines the recording storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most important spec of any DVR.

If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest you ask for a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVRs say they have remote viewing but it is often too slow and laggy to be of any use especially if it is a standalone. Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent. These brands are what security professionals use.

I recommend Ascendent as they are less expensive because they cameras for companies like Bosch and Pelco and offer better performance but any of these 3 brands will work well.

These brand manufacturers also have a complete line of CCTV cameras and DVR for any application from residential to military and stand behind there warranties. You want to get a good bran name otherwise you will likely buy a product that work and cant be returned.

Where can I learn more about Linux?
Q. I'm only in high school, but I'd really like to learn more about Linux, specifically securing servers, networking, and command line stuff. It's hard for me to learn on my own. Books are helpful but I'm looking for more of a classroom environment with other people I can work with.

My school does not offer any classes in Linux.

A. http://www.ubuntu.com/

It doesn't get any simpler. And, of course, there's Linux for Dummies at your local bookstore, the For Dummies series of books runs around $20 each and is usually the best bet when starting to learn from scratch.

And there's probably a Linux user group in your town -- Google it.

Are there any good Linux tutorials on the Internet for beginners?

Q. I know there are a lot of different distributions, but is there a good beginners tutorial that teaches the basics of installing, configuring, and using Linux? Also a site that maybe goes into advanced topics after you have mastered the basics. Thanks for the help!

A. I am biased here but if you are going to install Linux I would suggest Suse 10 or Suse 10.1, it is very easy to install, you can accept the defaults without any problems, just follow the onscreen instructions, just boot from CD 1.
here is a web site that has info for suse 10
http://madpenguin.org/cms/html/47/5382.html

or you could look at the Novel site
http://www.novell.com/products/suselinux/ for download and info also you can ask them anything you need to know.

Here are some other linux sites.

http://www.joeaudette.com/installingsuse10.aspx
http://www.geocities.com/aboutlinux/
http://librenix.com/?inode=7512
this one looks quite good.
http://www.linuxsurvival.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=1&meid=-1

If you want any more info email me.

I need an expect script to telnet into a linux server that is menu driven. What are the proper commands?
Q. I want to ssh into multiple machines and choose option 1 from the menu driven linux interface.

A. That question makes absolutely no sense.
All linux distributions have ssh built -in, you can ssh from your command line or use a client like PuTTY.
If you are wondering how to manage multiple ssh sessions, check out screen here http://www.rackaid.com/resources/linux-tutorials/general-tutorials/using-screen/ .
If this does not answer your question please elaborate more as to what exactly you wish to accomplish.

What free linux is the closest to windows?
Q. What linux works the closest to Windows and is also free?

A. I recommend Linux Mint 6 (Main Edition) which you will find familiar and it works pretty much 'out of the box'.

Linux Mint 6 Release notes
http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_felicia.php
Linux Mint 6 Download
http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=31

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 6 then you need to create a Bootable CD from the ISO. This can easily be done using Nero Burning ROM or similar software. Linux Mint 6 can be run straight from the LiveCD you have created without touching your Hard Drive.

If you find you like Linux Mint 6

What are some self persistent forms of linux?

Q. I need a form of linux that is persistent, and preferably between 10-900 mb in size. Some examples are: Tiny Core, Slax, Ubuntu, and Damn Small Linux. (DSL)
Yeah sorry im using a FLASHDRIVE to do this

A. All versions of linux are persistent after they are installed on the hard drive.
This will let you install linux on a usb flash drive and provide some space to preserve the changes you make while using the flash drive.

Are these Linux distros useable as virtual hosts?
Q. Are there pre-built packages for, or guides to build, programs like Virtualbox on Damn Small Linux, Puppy Linux, or Tiny Core Linux? Or is there any low resource OS's that I haven't listed that would be better suited for the task of being a virtual host? I am wanting to try it out on my current pc before I build one specifically for virtualization.

Also, is it possible to stream a virtual OS from a server so that all the processing is done there and not on the client PC? ( kind of how certain rental companies stream a game to your computer, allowing you to play it, even if your computer doesn't meet the requirements.)

A. I presume you have a decent server so it can run big apps, so try Puppy, it's up to date and capable, unlike those others which might be missing things. Or try Bodhi, which is Ubuntu with a E17 desktop. Fast, and you've got all the Ubuntu repositories.

In Linux, how do I set a program to automatically start on boot-up?
Q. I'm running Tiny Core v3.4. I'd like for my Google Chrome to start up automatically on boot-up. I'd like the easiest, and most efficient way possible?

plz&thx

A. I have not used tiny core but some linux distros have a menu item that will let you automatically startup a program when you boot the computer. Some distros also have an option to restart any apps that are open when you shut down your system. If you select that option and leave chrome open when you shut down it will automatically startup on reboot.
Another possibility: in the link below scroll down to point 4. It explains how to startup some items.Add the name used to start chrome (chrome-browser probably) to the file.

What is the Net View command for linux?
Q. I have been playing around with Linux a lot lately. What is the linux net view equivalent? I can't figure it out for the life of me.

A. If you are talking about a TCP/IP Networks you have a bunch of commands that can act like Netview:

users
groups - Print group names a user is in
hostname - Print or set system name
id - Print user and group id's
logname - Print current login name
printenv - Print environment variables.
uname - Print system information
who - Print who is currently logged in

How do I create user accounts using a script that reads a list of names from a file?

How do you remove a Linux OS to install windows?
Q. I purchased a "used" computer from my company and it has a Linux OS on it. I would like to wipe it clean and install windows, but not sure how. Is there an easy way to do this?
I tried starting up with the windows 7 disk, in hopes it would just "over ride" the other, but no luck. The current OS is uBuntu...not sure if that makes a difference or not.

A. If you have a cd/dvd of the operating system you want, just put in on your optical drive
turn on your computer, press F8 or whatever button to change start up drive, change booth drive to your optical drive, save setting, exit and reboot.
Your computer will read your cd/dvd and will prompt you.
It will find your hard drive and ask you if you want to install it on that drive. (default C drive).
If you have a huge hard drive, you can partition your C drive to whatever size you want.
I prefer to assign only 50 Gig for drive C. Once the operating system is installed, I partition the remaining drive and use it as storage drive.
It fill format the drive and install your operating system.
Just follow the instructions of the install prompts.

If you are still having problems, use a separate computer, search for Hiren's boot cd in .iso format. Download and burn on cd/dvd. Just boot the cd in your used computer. It has a lot of partitioning programs you can choose to reformat your hard drive.
